Communication is the second chapter of the Birdmen manga series. Karasuma, Kamoda, Sagisawa, and Umino meet at the sky terrace of Sagisawa's high-rise building, and they attempt to summon the Birdman. Karasuma realizes the Birdman is likely his classmate, Takayama Sou.

Summary[]

Once the night has fallen, Karasuma and Kamoda meet up with Sagisawa on the terrace of his condominium. Sagisawa reveals that he can freely control his wings, and additionally, a mark has appeared on his back. He suggests practicing in order to control their wings, since it would be complicated if the wings were to appear in public. Karasuma demands Sagisawa to tell them about the Birdman, and Sagisawa is puzzled at the fact Karasuma can't seem to remember their encounter with the Birdman.

Umino arrives at the rooftop as well, and excitedly points out the fact that Karasuma and Kamoda have the same markings. Karasuma feels extremely insecure about his poor physique under Umino's scrutiny, but is caught off guard and even relieved by her comment that they're comrades after all.

Sagisawa tells them about his recollection of their encounter with the Birdman at the bus accident. As they were all bleeding out from fatal injuries, the Birdman appeared, perched upon a concrete wave breaker. He asked of them: "Do you want to die... Or do you want to live... What is your answer?" Bemused, Karasuma asks Sagisawa whether that was the contract that they had signed, and Sagisawa suspects the price they had to pay was to become the Birdman's comrades. Karasuma suddenly remembers drinking the Birdman's blood, and is filled with dread as he wonders what will become of them. Karasuma angrily insists that the Birdman is no angel; Sagisawa, on the other hand, believes the Birdman to be a human who grew wings, just like them, despite their devil-like appearance. Sagisawa, Kamoda, and Umino all express gratefulness toward the Birdman for saving them, though Karasuma can't bring himself to agree with them.

Sagisawa believes that they'll receive answers if they summon the Birdman and spreads his wings, ready to call out, but Karasuma feels uncomfortable about this course of action, and grabs Sagisawa's wrist in an attempt to make him reconsider. This results in Karasuma's wings unfurling as well, and shortly afterwards Umino and Kamoda follow suit. Sagisawa once again reiterates his desire to meet the Birdman and learn how to fly. They end up holding hands in a circle and calling out to the Birdman with their hearts, but Karasuma is wracked with doubts, and eventually, their attempt proves fruitless and they all begin heading home. Regardless, Sagisawa still thinks the Birdman is nearby, and tells Karasuma that the Birdman felt familiar to him somehow, even suggesting that the Birdman could be teenagers like them, based on their voice. Karasuma, prompted by this train of thought, realizes the voice of the Birdman and the classmate who had approached him after the accident is one and the same.

After returning home, Karasuma does some research on the Birdman on the internet, trying to confirm his suspicions. The timing of Takayama's transfer to their school, located in the Tokyo Bay Area, coincides with the eyewitness reports of Birdman sightings in the same area. The next day, the four of them stake out the entrance to Tenkuudai Middle School before class to try and confront Takayama. Karasuma stops Takayama, saying that he wants to ask him about something, and Takayama responds by mentioning their attempt to summon him last night. The chapter closes with Takayama giving them a meeting time and place, leaving Karasuma extremely disoriented.
