Chapter 2

Take Off is the first chapter of the Birdmen manga series. In this chapter, Karasuma and Kamoda grow wings, and Sagisawa reminds them about their contract with the Birdman.

Summary[]

After resting at the hospital briefly, Karasuma gets ready to head back to school, and comes to the realization that he no longer needs glasses. He quickly scarfs down his breakfast, and his mother gives him a new cell phone, nagging him about keeping in contact and not overdoing it. He meets up with Kamoda, and they comment on their changes in appearance: Karasuma's missing glasses, and Kamoda's summer uniform.

Karasuma thinks about how they miraculously sustained minor injuries in such a devastating accident, and Kamoda's offhand comment about girls being nicer to them because of the accident kicks Karasuma's brain into overdrive. He simulates several fake scenarios, trying to figure out what to say if people ask him about the accident. However, nobody approaches him, except for Takayama, who asks if he's alright. By the end of the school day, Karasuma begins to recall images of the Birdman at the accident, though he can't quite put his finger on the details.

After getting ahold of Sagisawa's address, Karasuma drags Kamoda along to Sagisawa's place, convinced that Sagisawa has a better idea of what's going on. They're stunned by the luxurious high-rise that Sagisawa lives in, and they run into Umino, who tells them that Sagisawa isn't accepting visitors right now. She inquires the two about their health after the accident, and also asks for their contact information, so she can get in touch with Sagisawa when he returns to school.

Having failed to rendezvous with Sagisawa, Karasuma asks to go to Kamoda's place instead. Though he is on the verge of remembering something important about the accident, he is wildly distracted by the fact Umino asked for his phone number. Meanwhile, Sagisawa appears to be sulking in his room, which is in violent disarray. At Kamoda's temple home, Kamoda busies himself with making tea, while Karasuma tries to clear his thoughts. When Kamoda comes in to serve the tea, he finds Karasuma in a trance with wings sprouting through his uniform. Karasuma's phone suddenly rings, and Kamoda tries picking it up, thinking it might be Umino, and Karasuma snaps out of his trance in order to stop Kamoda. Realizing he has sprouted wings, Karasuma starts screaming while Kamoda answers the phone. Panicking, Karasuma grabs Kamoda, which results in Kamoda sprouting wings as well. Sagisawa, the caller, is relieved to find that Karasuma and Kamoda have both changed, just as he has. The chapter ends with Sagisawa reminding them that they've signed a contract with the Birdman.
